Happy new year!

After the busy Christmas period, it takes a week or two for all our suppliers to resume business, and so there is an initial period of limbo where we all find ourselves living off turkey scraps and mince pie crumbs, but do not panic! We are once again fully stocked with fresh local produce. Here are some dates that you may find useful:

  • Thursday 4th Jan: Artisan bread baking resumes, with a selection of handmade loaves available to tempt you.
  • Thursday 4th Jan: The T Box returns to our forecourt, serving hot drinks and grilled cheese sourdough sandwiches.
  • Friday 5th Jan: Johnsons Fishmongers return to our forecourt with freshly caught fish.

At the time of writing, Seville oranges have arrived in stock, so it’s a good time to shelter from the wet weather and make marmalade!

We hope Christmas was a successful one for you (if you ordered a turkey, crown, or any other joint from us, we’d love to know how it was). Happy new year for 2018, we hope to see you in our shop soon.

The T Box has arrived

The T Box has arrived at Southbourne Farm Shop, a vintage Sinclair horse box trailer that has been lovingly transformed into a mobile cafe. Tuesdays – Saturdays every week, The T Box will offer coffee made with coffee beans supplied by Crafted Coffee, hand-roasted in Funtington and freshly ground to order, and a selection of loose-leaf tea varieties blended at the All About Tea Company in Portsmouth. Organic milk for hot drinks is sourced from Goodwood Home Farm, or (for a dairy-free alternative) almond milk and oat milk are also available.

The T Box also serves grilled cheese sandwiches made using handmade artisan sourdough from our own in-house bakery here at Southbourne Farm Shop. There are two to choose from: The Classic (grilled cheese trio of Swiss Emmental, Gruyere and Old Amsterdam in toasted sourdough bread), or The Carnivore (Pastrami, Swiss Emmental, Gruyere, pickles and beer mustard in toasted sourdough bread). The flavour is incredible.

Hot drinks will be served in entirely biodegradable packaging, and the intention is to source produce locally and keep the carbon foot print as low as possible. The T Box is situated in our car park, near the shop entrance, Tuesdays – Fridays from 8am, and Saturday from 9am.

Autumn update

It’s been a busy Autumn for Southbourne Farm Shop; during September we held two tasting events (“Tasty Fridays”, as they become known, worldwide…) in which we gathered a selection of our suppliers and invited them to come to the farm shop, and meet our customers and offer samples of their delicious products. The response from both the suppliers and our customers was fantastic, and it’s something that we certainly hope to do again. The tasting events gave us the opportunity to introduce some fantastic new product ranges, which we now stock on a regular basis. These include Seed & Sage brownies, Tom Parker Creamery iced coffee and chocolate milk, Summerdown Mint chocolates, and Froghollow Catering’s all-natural energy bites.

We also took part in Emsworth’s “A Food for Thought” food market at the beginning of October. This was the first time that Southbourne Farm Shop has gone mobile and sprouted a mini offspring in another location! Our stall offered chutneys, cakes, a selection of our finest handmade artisan loaves, and our ever-popular cheese straws. (We apologise if we have created new cheese straw addicts in the Emsworth area.)

October also saw the arrival of  a new addition to the farm shop family. Conrad the horse is eight years old, and extremely friendly. His hobbies include munching carrots and good conversation. We’ve been looking for a new horse ever since our much-loved Simba passed away earlier in the year. Our other horse Christie is very pleased to have a new companion, and already Conrad and Christie seem to have a good bond. Next time you are at the farm, pop in and ask us for a couple of free carrots – Conrad and Christie will become your friends for life!

New website coming soon

Yum!Later this month we will be launching our new website, which will replace this one. Alongside a visual revamp, the new site will be updated regularly with news and event information related to the farm, as well as our in-house bakery.

More detailed updates on new products and farming life will be presented in our new quarterly email newsletter, with the first coming in June. Anyone who has subscribed to our current blog (using the Email Subscription button in the column to the right) will automatically be added to the new newsletter. As before, we will not pass your contact information on to anyone else. Those of our customers who ticked the relevant box in our recent Customer Survey will also receive the newsletter.

Our hope is that our new site and newsletter will allow us to interact with our customers even more (we always appreciate feedback). If you don’t already follow us on social media, please do check out our Instagram page, our Twitter page and our Facebook page.
